From USA Today bestselling author comes the second book in the Lost Boys series of interconnected standalones. Holden and River's emotional and heart-wrenching journey to love, redemption, and their happy ever after.
When You Come Back To Me by Emma Scott is now live!
At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys...
Holden Parish survived his parents' horrific attempts to make him "the perfect son." After a year's stint in a Swiss sanitarium to recover, he has vowed to never let anything-- or anyone--trap him again. Brilliant but broken, he seeks refuge behind alcohol, meaningless sex, and uses his wicked sense of humor to keep people away. He only has to ride out one year in the coastal town of Santa Cruz with his aunt and uncle before he inherits his billions and can make his escape. Disappear.
Falling in love is not in the plans.
River Whitmore. Star quarterback of the Central High football team, Prom King, Mr. Popular, ladies' man. He leads the perfect life...except it's all a lie. His father has River's future in the NFL all planned out, while River's dream is to run the family business in the town that he loves. But his mother's illness is tearing the family apart and River is becoming the glue that holds them together. How can he break his father's heart when it's already shattering?
River's carefully-crafted façade explodes when he meets Holden Parish. A guy who dresses in coats and scarves year-round, drinks expensive vodka, and spends his free time breaking into houses for the fun of it. They're complete opposites. River seeks a quiet life, away from the spotlight. Holden would rather have dental surgery than settle down.
Holden's demons and River's responsibilities threaten to keep them apart, while their undeniable attraction crashes them together again and again, growing into something deep and real no matter how they resist.
Until one terrible night changes everything.

Emma is known (notorious) for heart-breaking, heart-melting stories of vulnerable people who are often dejected and abandoned. She writes from the heart and they camped inside mine!
The story invaded my heart, my soul, my dreams. I've been tossing & turning all night, thinking about Holden Parish and River Whitmore. Holden is a cold soul loitering in Alaskan Tundra and the warmth of River is like a ray of warming sunshine in his dismal life
There's something unique about this story. All the characters are lost. Dad, Amelia, River, in their individual grief and loss. Dad checks out of the reality by being a walking zombie, Amelia turns to insensitive rebellion and River struggles to find his place in this world, bearing the brunt of it ALL. And by ALL that I mean EVERYTHING!!
His narrow shoulders are lifting the mountain of his own loss, his plastic life, the house, Dad, Amelia, Shop, football and now Holden.... His layers are piling on!
"exhausted from the strain of repressing my deepest longings at the same time. I’d been playing a role, lying to myself for so long that I had no idea who I was. How did it get this far?"
I could see his knees buckling under the Himalayan Boulder of responsibilities and stresses that went with it. Alone and no one to share his burden with, it's at this point, that his missing piece enters his life. the silver haired, Green eyed, Holden Parish.
Their lives twine around each other like creepers looking for anchor. Who's the trunk of stable tree and who's the shelter seeking tendril..changes from time to time.
“That’s a catch-22. The solution to our dilemma is inherent in the problem itself.”
“Which is?”
“We both want something we can never have,”
Their symbiosis is the most beautifully torturous relationship to bear witness to. Much like the narrator, I wanted to jump in and hug them both tight. Hide them in my motherly embrace and give them a safe place to weep and vent. But alas, our love for fictional characters takes heavy toll on us and we writhe and convulse in agonizing make believe world of pain.
But here's the thing, nobody can tell me that
My pain was not real.
My tears were not real.
My anguish is not real
“Thank you for loving me when I didn’t.
You deserve to beloved out loud”
Such is the powerful prose of Emma, I could not remein unaffected, uncompssionate towards her characters. The story took my breath away. It barged in my soul like a powerful force of nature, pelted me with emotions and soaked me to the bone.
Both River and Holden changed the roles of Rescuers depending upon the situation. They both were equally saviours and equally victims, so it wasn't a one sided God-complex, black and white story.
My huge admiration for Emma is reaching unhealthy proportions and I shamelessly lap up every word of hers like a starving Oliver and keep coming back for more.
"What going to happen next"?
Cannot wait for Ronan & Shiloh now
6 stars for Catch-22 of Paradoxes and Dilemmas
