There’s no pain quite as excruciating as watching the woman who gave birth to you, who raised and cared for you, slowly killing herself. Whether intentional or not is irrelevant. There are only two people to blame for her condition.
One of them is me and I couldn’t save her.
My father is somewhere out there on a bender. Just another one in a cycle of many. Hundreds that I’ve known in my lifetime. Twenty-two years of booze, drugs and disappearing acts.
I need to drink. And get high.

These self-destructive behaviors are the only things that get me out of my head long enough to avoid thinking about all I’ve done. All the pain I’ve created. The deaths I’ve caused.
It’s just another reason to hate myself and the man I’ve become. If I wasn’t such a fucking coward, I’d be lying in the ground next to her right now, too. Next to my brother’s grave, as well.
There are days I wish I wouldn’t wake up. That I could fuck myself up so much that I’d fall asleep and drift off into the endless night. Because that would mean I wouldn’t have to live any longer with this constant malignant hatred that lives deep inside my soul. The self-loathing, loss and grief that I’ve caused.
But instead, the daylight always returns, making that hole in my heart seem bigger and deeper.

A really different pairing of a couple from wrong side of .......... ethnicity! This was my first book reading about a Mexican immigrant and I was wondering why hadn't anybody written about it before. Micalea Reyes is a hardworking young girl from a Mexican immigrant family. A family that works together, takes care of each other and celebrates together, and also being at the recieving end of social prejudices, stays tight knit, doesn't let their kids stray too far from their own kind. So what happens when Mica falls for a Gringo ?
Well at first it's glares and death stares, but Mica has proven herself consistently, how she wants to carve a path for herself in this adopted land of opportunities!
Lance Britton is the college Basketball star who is surrounded by his own set of groupies
As a twenty-two-year old college athlete, I’ve had just about every type of woman there is. Tall, blonde Barbie Dolls, fun-loving sorority sisters, perma-tanned hoops hunnies, and every other college chick who wants to have some fun with a college basketball player.
And he has feelings for our dear Mica, only she is reticent. Because she knows the line that divides them is of culture, race, status and social standing. And never the twain shall meet 😟
He was this untouchable basketball player who had swarms of groupies. And I was just... the daughter of a Mexican immigrant who had a crush on a unicorn of a man that she could never have.
But as Mica herself screams at times
love is love, dammit! It doesn’t matter what skin color they have or who their parents are or where they met or what their ethnicity and culture is. It shouldn’t matter because if they are happy, that’s the only thing that should be considered.
And that is how it should be,the book packs a powerful message of untainted love and kinship. Humans versus caricatures. Brotherhood versus prejudices
They defy all odds and hardships and yet are failed by Lance's inner demon that is eating him alive, his failure to protect his brother and his inability to please his father and one more deadly secret !!!!
I liked the story , it was very real and very current. The writing is soooooo good! Characters are caught in turmoil and Mica is really sensible. Touched my heart in many places
