"Maybe we did grow heart bones. But what if the only way of knowing you grew a heart bone is by feeling the agony caused by the break?"
A powerful story of a mismatched, mistimed love that isn't even love to begin with. It's kinship, affiliation and soul connecting to kindred soul. Two lonely, down on their luck, abandoned teenagers have a fated encounter on a ferry. They're both running from their past, on the verge of stepping into an unknown, darkened, unexplored future sharing a sunrise together....alone
Beyah Grim, whose claim to identity is this - a product of poor choices and lack of contraception
She legit is a scrape at the bottom of the barrel. Things have no way but up to go for her.
Her Eyes meet with a boy behind the lens- Samson who's sneekily taking pics of her and their soul senses a connection.
That summer spent on the beach of Bolivar Peninsula would become a much needed but totally unexpected change in direction of their lives. She ends up on the beach like a driftwood, direction less and aimless.
"I was sitting at a dinner table with five people I don’t know, in a house I’ve never been in, in a state I’ve never"
She's a misfit girl like a square peg in a round hole, in search of her identity, her place in this world. Samson is a pile of debris himself, a beach bum of sorts.
As the story progresses you get to see the metamorphosis of Beyah. She peels away layer by layer of Samson personality but in the process discovers her own hidden qualities. The epiphanies or come to jesus moments are especially poignant. Her qualities or lack thereof are more glaring when she stands next to her stepsister- sara or finds her fit in the real world.
The best part is the anti climax. Any lesser author would've gone the cheesier, well trodden path but Colleen in her superlative wisdom gives Samson a mature moment. The clarity of vision needs a special applause at this point
Everybody must read this book, so go pick it up
